Digital Dentures (D2 / 3D / Milled)

Digital Dentures: Milled and 3D Printed Workflows

A digital denture changes how the prosthesis is made, not what it must achieve for the patient. Scans in, CAD design, milled or printed bases, and a dataset behind every arch: this is the fabrication route for practices that want their denture work to carry the repeatability of modern production.

What Exactly Is a Digital Denture?

A digital denture is a complete denture designed in CAD and produced by machine: the base milled from a pre-polymerized puck or 3D printed, the teeth placed or bonded into a digitally planned arrangement, the whole prosthesis checked against its own design file. The clinical goals never move an inch; fit, function, and esthetics are judged at the same try-in and the same delivery as ever. What changes is the route, and the fact that the prosthesis exists as data before it exists as acrylic. RSU has run a digital backbone since 2010, so this page describes daily production, not a pilot project with a press release.

When to Choose the Digital Denture Route

Choose digital when your practice scans edentulous arches, when you want fewer physical shipments per case, or when reproducibility genuinely matters: a patient prone to losing or breaking prostheses, a group practice standardizing denture quality across many offices at once, an immediate case where a printed interim earns its keep on extraction day. Conventional processing remains available from the very same bench; the D2 digital denture line simply gives that bench a second, data-driven road to one identical standard.

Open a Lab Account
Is there a digital denture dentist near me?

We are the laboratory side of that search: dentists across all 50 states send us scans, and the digital work happens on our benches. Ask your dentist whether their lab runs a digital denture workflow; if the answer is Reliable Dental Studio, it has since 2010.

Are 3D printed dentures as good as milled ones?

They solve different problems well. A milled denture comes from dense, pre-polymerized material and is our default for definitive work; a 3d printed denture wins on speed and economy, which makes it the strong choice for interim, immediate, and backup prostheses. We recommend per case and tell you which route the Rx should take.

Does a digital denture cost more than conventional?

Lab fees sit in a similar range; the economics shift elsewhere. Fewer physical shipments, fewer remakes from record errors, and a dataset that makes a replacement dramatically simpler are where practices feel the difference. We quote per case to accounts; patient pricing stays with the practice.

What records does the digital route need?

Ideally intraoral scans of both arches plus a bite record and photos; conventional impressions work equally well because we digitize them on arrival. Digital denture impressions are less about the tool and more about complete borders and a trustworthy bite, and we flag gaps before design rather than after delivery.

The Digital Denture Workflow, From End to End

The digital denture lab workflow runs in clean, auditable stages, and the order never changes: records arrive as scans or get digitized in-house on calibrated equipment, the technician designs base, tooth arrangement, and bite as one coherent dataset, the finished design is reviewed against your Rx and case notes, and only then does the mill or the printer get to run at all. Because every stage leaves a file behind it, questions get answered by opening the design instead of squinting at a stone model, a disputed bite can be re-examined while the case is current, and any single stage can be repeated without starting the whole case over from new records.

Milled Denture or 3D Printed: Two Machines, Two Different Jobs

Digital denture milling carves the base from a pre-polymerized puck, which brings dense, consistently cured material to the table and is the route we default to for definitive prostheses. Printing builds the base additively and shines wherever speed and economy lead the decision instead: interim dentures, immediate designs seated on extraction day, spare duplicates for travel or backup. A printed denture is not a lesser product when it is prescribed for the right job; it becomes the wrong product only when it quietly substitutes for a definitive one, and we keep that line explicit on every Rx.

Digital Denture Design: Decisions You Can Review

Digital denture design moves the classic decisions onto a screen where they can be checked before they cost any material: midline, occlusal plane, vertical dimension, tooth mould, base thickness. On request we share design previews for demanding cases, so the practice sees the planned arrangement on screen while changes are still free and the patient conversation still has room to breathe. The digital denture teeth themselves come from the same quality tooth lines as our conventional work; the arrangement is planned in software, and the finishing remains a technician's handwork.

Reproducibility, Stated Within Honest Limits

The quiet superpower of digital denture fabrication is the dataset behind each arch. While records are current, a lost or broken prosthesis can be reproduced from the same file instead of restarting from impressions and appointments; as a courtesy we keep digital models for up to 30 days from the fabrication date, and anything beyond that window is assessed per case together with your records. That is a real, practical advantage over conventional processing, stated deliberately without overpromising anything: data helps most when the replacement question comes early, and honesty about the storage window is part of the service.

One Dataset Away From Implant Retention

The digital route pairs naturally with implant work, and it pays off twice. A digital denture with implants in the plan can be designed so the same dataset later carries attachment housings for a snap-on denture or an implant overdenture, which keeps the step-up conversation cheap for the patient and clean for the practice, because nothing has to be re-recorded when the retention decision matures. The fixed full-arch options live with our implant department; the whole removable side of that spectrum is planned right here, on the very same screens.

Digital Since 2010, Family-Owned Since 1994

Reliable Dental Studio has been family-owned since 1994 and digital since 2010, which means the digital denture laboratory behind your case carries more than a decade of production experience and files, not a freshly installed printer and a brochure. Send your scans through the secure portal from anywhere in the country, or ship conventional impressions with the prepaid labels we provide; turnaround is 5–7 working days, with rush subject to approval. Accounts open online or by phone at 888-575-3906; expect our reply within 24 hours, and once the paperwork is complete, your first digital case can upload the very same week.
