What Is a Flipper Tooth?

A flipper tooth is a lightweight acrylic appliance that replaces one or a few missing teeth, usually in the esthetic zone. Clinically an interim removable partial denture, it is also known as a dental flipper, denture flipper, or partial denture flipper. It restores the smile immediately after extraction, holds the space during implant healing or bridge planning, and gives the patient confidence while the definitive restoration is under way. Its job is temporary; the impression it makes on your patient is not. A well-made flipper sits securely, looks natural, and keeps the patient comfortable through every phase of treatment.

When to Choose a Dental Flipper for Your Patient

Prescribe a flipper as an immediate esthetic solution after extraction, as a space maintainer during implant osseointegration, or as an interim solution while a definitive partial, bridge, or implant restoration is planned. For long-term removable solutions, a cast metal or flexible partial denture is usually the better choice; we fabricate those as well and can plan the transition with you.

Open a Lab Account
How fast can I get a flipper tooth for my patient?

Standard flipper cases leave the lab in seven to ten working days plus shipping, and rush scheduling is available when a patient needs an immediate esthetic solution. If you plan an extraction in advance, send the case early. We fabricate the flipper beforehand, so your patient never goes without a tooth.

Flipper vs. Essix with a pontic: which interim solution is better?

Both have their place. A dental flipper is more durable for longer interim phases, easier to adjust, and handles gingival changes after extraction better. A clear retainer with a pontic tooth is slimmer and nearly invisible but less robust. Tell us the expected wear time and we will recommend the right design.

Can a flipper be adjusted as the ridge heals?

Yes. Resorption after extraction is normal, and a flipper can be relined or adjusted to follow the changing ridge. Send it back with a short note; small adjustments are usually quick, so your patient does not go days without their tooth.

What should I include with a flipper case?

An impression or intraoral scan, the shade, the teeth to be replaced, and your clasp preference if any. Photos help with esthetic cases. If the setup allows different options, the responsible technician confirms the design with you before processing.

Dental Flippers Made With Denture-Department Craft

Reliable Dental Studio has fabricated removables since 1994: full dentures, partials, and the humble flipper tooth that carries a patient through the hardest weeks of treatment. Because our dental flippers come out of a real denture department, they benefit from the same standards as definitive work: proper tooth selection, a clean wax setup, controlled acrylic processing, and polished finishing. Family-owned from the start, the lab treats interim appliances with the same seriousness as final restorations, because your patient wears the result in the smile zone. Every case is checked against the prescription and passes documented quality control before it ships, and materials are brand-name denture acrylics and prosthetic teeth throughout. No shortcuts on interim work; a well-made interim partial protects the treatment plan and your chair time alike.

What Makes a Flipper Tooth Look Natural

Esthetics decide whether a flipper tooth does its job. Our technicians shade-match the prosthetic tooth, shape the acrylic to follow the natural gingival line, and keep the palatal portion as slim as retention allows, so the interim tooth reads as a tooth rather than an appliance. Retention gets the same attention: optional wire clasps are placed where they hold without showing, and the acrylic is adapted to use natural undercuts. The result sits securely for daily life yet stays gentle on healing tissue. Photos of the smile line and the adjacent teeth help on demanding anterior cases; send them with the Rx and the technician matches shape and shade against them.

Timing an Immediate Dental Flipper

Timing is a design factor on every dental flipper. An immediate flipper made from pre-extraction records needs different ridge relief than one fabricated after healing, so note which situation applies on the prescription and we build the fit accordingly, including gentle relief over fresh extraction sites. If you plan the extraction in advance, send the case early: we fabricate the flipper tooth beforehand, and your patient leaves the extraction appointment with the gap already closed. As the ridge remodels over the following weeks, relines and small adjustments keep the fit snug through the healing months. Document the extraction date on the Rx as well; it helps the technician judge how much settling to expect by the delivery appointment.

Flipper Tooth Cases, Delivered Nationwide

Practices in all 50 states send flipper cases to our three labs in California, Colorado, and Texas: via UPS and FedEx with prepaid labels we provide, by scheduled local pickup, or digitally through our secure portal. The lab has worked digitally since 2010 and accepts STL and OBJ files from all common intraoral scanners. Timing matters most on interim work, and the workflow is built for it: standard dental flipper cases ship in seven to ten working days in-lab, and rush slots are available when a front tooth cannot wait. If a flipper is lost or broken within 30 days of fabrication, we can refabricate from your existing digital records on request; after that window a fresh impression or scan is usually needed. One call, and no extra impression appointment for the patient. Practices near our California lab at 3020 Ivar Ave, Rosemead, CA 91770 can also arrange drop-off directly, and our team confirms receipt of every case on the day it arrives.

Direct Technician Contact on Every Flipper Case

Questions about clasp placement, pontic design, or expected wear time are settled before processing, not after the seat appointment. You talk directly to the technician who sets the case, and if the setup allows different options, the design is confirmed with you first. All three locations run identical workflows and materials, so a flipper tooth made in one location matches one made in another: same setup quality, same finish, same standard. That consistency matters to group practices that split cases between regions, and it keeps adjustments predictable when a patient moves between offices mid-treatment. And if a question comes up after delivery, the same technician remains your contact for adjustments and advice.

From Interim Flipper to Definitive Restoration

A dental flipper is usually chapter one of a longer treatment story. Because our lab also fabricates partial dentures, flexible partials, and implant crowns, the definitive restoration can follow seamlessly: same records, same shade logic, same contact person from interim to final. If the treatment plan changes midway, say an implant instead of a bridge or longer healing than expected, talk to us first. Relines, added teeth, or a refreshed interim are usually faster and more economical than starting over, and your patient keeps their smile throughout. Ready to give your patients a better interim experience? Send your next flipper tooth case to Reliable Dental Studio or open a lab account; we respond to new practices within 24 hours, and once your documents are complete, supplies and portal access are included.
