What Is a Sleep Apnea Mouth Guard?

A sleep apnea mouth guard, clinically a mandibular advancement device (MAD), is a custom two-arch oral appliance that holds the mandible in a gently protruded position during sleep, helping keep the airway open. Unlike a boil-and-bite mouth guard for sleeping from the drugstore, a lab-fabricated appliance is made on precise models of the patient's dentition, with a protrusion setting you prescribe and control. The result: better retention, less bulk, and an appliance patients can actually sleep with. That is where therapy succeeds or fails.

When to Choose a MAD for Your Patient

Oral appliance therapy is typically indicated for primary snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or for CPAP-intolerant patients, always based on your diagnosis and, where applicable, a sleep physician's referral. As your lab, we fabricate the appliance to your prescription: you set the therapeutic parameters, we deliver the precision and comfort that determine whether the patient wears it.

What do you need from me for a mandibular advancement device?

Impressions or intraoral scans of both arches and a protrusive bite record at your chosen starting advancement. Note the design and any titration requirements on the Rx. If the bite record raises questions, the responsible technician contacts you before fabrication begins.

Sleep apnea mouth guard vs. night guard: what is the difference?

A night guard protects teeth from bruxism on one arch; a custom mouth guard for sleep apnea is a two-arch device that advances the mandible to support an open airway during sleep. They are not interchangeable: a patient who needs both requires a clinical decision on priority, and we are happy to fabricate whichever appliance you prescribe.

Can the advancement be adjusted after delivery?

Yes, we fabricate adjustable designs that allow controlled titration within the appliance's range, so you can fine-tune protrusion over the course of therapy. Specify your preferred mechanism on the Rx, and we will build the appliance around your titration protocol.

Is a custom appliance really better than a boil-and-bite device?

For therapy adherence, fit is everything. A lab-made appliance sits on exact models of the patient's dentition, holds its setting, and is far slimmer than self-fitted products, and patients notice that every single night. Retention, durability, and controlled advancement are the reasons clinicians prescribe custom appliances.
